Jio is now second-largest telecom operator in India, leads overall broadband sector by 55 per cent market share

Every month, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) comes up with a report on the statistics of the telecom sector. For the last few months, the sector has seen Vodafone Idea dominate the market despite losing subscribers at a higher rate. For May 2019, Vodafone Idea still stays on top with an overall market share of 33.36 per cent, thereby retaining the lead. However, a lot of activity has happened below the first spot.

For all these months, we have seen a lot of aggressive pricing strategies from the biggest players in the segment such as Airtel, BSNL and Vodafone. While the new plans may have worked for Vodafone, that hasn’t happened for Airtel. The operator dropped to third place with an overall market share of 27.58 per cent. BSNL sits in the chart with a market share of 9.98 per cent, which when combined with MTNL goes up to 10.28 per cent.

However, it has all been good news for Reliance Jio that showed growth with a market share of 27.8 per cent. It is narrowly surpassed Airtel but has now gained the second largest market share. And that’s surprising considering that unlike Airtel and Vodafone, Reliance Jio doesn’t alter its pricing for its plans. Most of its prepaid plans have remained unchanged for a long time and the same old benefits have existed for many months now.

It seems that the extremely low pricing of its plans which none of its competitors can match has helped it gain consistently despite the telecom sector witnessing a drop in wireless connections. On top of that, Jio subscribers don’t need to spend extra for recharging with Talktime and validity — all they need to do is purchase the vouchers and everything is taken care of.
